The Psalms of Ascent
From May 22nd through the end of August, we, as a church, are going to be not just studying – but praying and being formed by the Psalms 120 through 134, otherwise known as the Psalms of Ascent.  These were the songs sung and prayers prayed by God’s pilgrim people, God’s people on the way.  Eugene Peterson wrote a wonderful book of reflections on these Psalms, called A Long Obedience In The Same Direction, which we will be drawing on as we endeavor to study, pray, sing, and live these Psalms.  If you wanted to pick up a copy to read and enrich your reading of the Psalms – please do!

These 15 Psalms were likely sung by Hebrew pilgrims as they travelled from their many scattered cities and towns literally up in elevation – ascending to Jerusalem.  Roughly 3 times a year (the Feast of Passover in the spring, the Feast of Pentecost in early summer, and the Feast of Tabernacles in autumn) God’s people found themselves as pilgrims, as people in between, as people on the way.  This is, of course, a metaphor for our lives, too; as we find ourselves in between Christ’s redemption fully accomplished on the cross, and the consummation we hope and long for in his return.  We are people who have been completely forgiven and made new in Christ, yet we struggle, and sin, and along with creation “groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.” (Romans 8:23)

Our hope is that these Psalms might be resources for the journey; giving us a language, imagination, and strength for the long obedience of following Christ in our everyday lives, every day of our lives.  Speaking of resources – check out this video of Bono & Eugene Peterson on the Psalms.
