When I first went into rock and roll disc jockeying, slightly after the
invention of electricity, there was a hit 45 rpm record that I spun over and over and over. It was sung by Andrew Gold, a one hit wonder, and the song was entitled “Oh, What a Lonely Boy”. Well, I have been singing that song lately, with both a smile and a grimace. I have been traveling heavily on denominational work the the Christian Reformed Church, and at the same time, my cousin Nick Watts, in England was diagnosed and then died of pancreatic cancer. I did two trips to England in 4 weeks sandwiched between trips to Orlando, Grand Rapids and Boston.
Then, back home, my beloved Mark and Summer Mohrlang brought, Amelia, their second child into the world and they are off on maternity leave. God bless them. This is a great time for them to be away and bonding as a family.
And, I am here singing “Oh What a Lonely Boy”. The office is a little quieter. Denise and Joey are in on Monday. Jason, our new Green Bean manager, is up to his ears. But, I am actually enjoying being mostly here this summer. I am enjoying being in the office and grabbing time with people. I am enjoying taking care of needs in hospitals, with construction at the Bean and responding to crises like the recent death of Phil Keene. I take my call seriously — and sometimes, being a little more solo and covering the “point” is a reminder to me of how privileged I am to be a pastor, and particularly YOUR pastor. I love this church and all of you. I miss you when I am gone.
And, this summer, while we are all on breaks and enjoying a little time of sunshine, I am hoping you might just intrude on this lonely boy for a cup of coffee, a meal, some time in prayer or visioning for our work here in Greenwood.
Oh, what a lonely boy — kind of, but not really!
Much Love,
Randy
